The south of England is an expensive place to live. Figures published in 2018 showed the median (average) cost of a home in Basingstoke & Deane was 9.5 times the median (average) salary. That same year, 3,674 people were on the housing waiting list in the district yet only 608 new affordable homes were delivered.

We think it is important that new affordable homes are provided in the district to ensure young families and those unable to afford market rents have a chance to get on the property ladder in the area that they call home. That is why we are supporting an application for land to the south of Overton, a scheme which will deliver much needed affordable housing in a sustainable location. It has the potential to deliver up to 75 new homes, with a guaranteed 40% of these homes being made available for rent or shared ownership. You can find out more about that application here.

Bargate Homes proposes delivering high quality, well designed new homes on behalf of parent company, VIVID (one of the largest Housing Associations in the UK). Last year VIVID helped 356 families buy a home of their own, through 200 shared ownership properties, 126 properties built for direct private sale and 30 homes converted from Intermediate rent to shared ownership.  Overall VIVID would like to create 17,000 new affordable homes across the south over the next 10 years.
